My newest utility, PopCorn MKV ReMuxer is now available for download.

The latest additions to the program are as follows:

1. v1.63
   • Save Complete Setup: It is now possible to export the complete setup from the registry into a file that can be double-clicked to restore it (even on another machine). It can also be used to send to me to help me catch bugs that are hard to reproduce on my machine.
2. v1.62
   • AutoRun: An auto-run feature has been implemented. To use it, you must call the program as follows:
     Remuxer RUN <SourceDir> <TargetDir> [<Script>]
     (If you don't know how to read a command line description, read this message)
     <SourceDir> and <TargetDir> must exist, and there has to be .MKV files in <SourceDir> that doesn't exist in <TargetDir>. If any of these conditions aren't met, the program will simply not autorun...
     What this does is to load the program, load the specified script (or script "Default" if no script is specified), load all .MKV files that exist in <SourceDir> but not in <TargetDir> into the file list, applying the loaded script to the files as they are added, then click the "Run" button for you.
     
3. v1.61
   • MKV Merge: Earlier versions had problems detecting locations of MKV Tools. Now also checks for 64-bit versions of MKV Tools.
   • EurekaLog: EurekaLog is now included in the program so that any errors will be sent to my Mantis bug reporting site. However, I will not be notified of these reports, so you still need to report them here. It'll just make it easier for me to go bug hunting, as I will have a complete trace of the bug including a copy of the program's settings.

   • Unicode version: Should now be better at supporting national characters (but please let me know if you run into problems).
   • PGS Subs: Should now support adding PGS subtitles in the external tracks addition (lower right corner of window).

   • MKV Tools v6.0+ compatible: Parsing of MKV Info 6.0.0's output would in some cases fail to detect the proper track number, so an update to the parser was made.

   • MKV Tools v6.0+ compatible: The program is now compatible with MKV Tools v6.0. There appears to (in some cases) be an inconsistency between the Track UIDs reported by MKV Merge and MKV Info, making it difficult to synchronize the output from these two programs, so a different method of synchronizing the outputs have been implemented.

   • MKV Tools v5.3+ compatible: The program is now compatible with MKV Tools v5.3 (and on, I hope). It is incompatible with v5.2.0 as this one has a nasty inconsistency between MkvMerge/MkvInfo regaring track numbers/IDs, and should NOT be used with v5.2.1 (it's untested with that version - upgrade to v5.3).
   • New programming option: Language Groups. You can now create a group containing as many languages you want and use this in your programming. I have, f.ex., created a "Scandinavian" group containing Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish, which I can now use as a language in Audio or Subtitle programming to match multiple languages in one programming step. You set up the groups with the new "G" button on the programming screen.

   • MKV Tools v5.2.1 compatible: The program is now compatible with MKV Tools v5.2.1 (and on, I hope). It is incompatible with v5.2.0 as this one has a nasty inconsistency between MkvMerge/MkvInfo regaring track numbers/IDs.

This utility can also be used to ReMux files that have had Header Compression turned on - just don't uncheck any tracks and they will all be preserved. As it is now, all Compression is automatically turned off for all tracks, except S_VOBSUB and S_HDMV/PGS tracks, for which compression is enabled.

I'll always have fond memories of Audio Convertor and really look forward to giving this one a go.

When you have unpacked the .ZIP file and started up the application, you'll be presented with a screen like this:




where

1 = Add .MKV files to be processed (you can also use drag'n'drop)
2 = Remove marked (highlighted) files from the file list
3 = The version of MKV Merge to use (the program searches for mkvmerge.exe in several places and compiles a list of all versions found)
4 = Takes you to the Output (Save) Options configuration screen
5 = Takes you to the Track Selection configuration screen

First you need to add some .MKV files to the file list. You do this in the normal fashion either via the "+" button or by simple drag'n'drop to the File List. The program will then scan the files using MKVInfo and MediaInfo (make sure you have these utilities installed) and collect track information for the files. When completed, you'll have a window something like this:




On the left you'll see all the files that are ready for processing, and on the right you'll see the tracks that are in the file currently selected on the left. You can then uncheck the tracks you don't want to keep in the various files, OR you can use the "Magic Button" (#5 - the wrench), which takes you to the following screen:




Here you will see a compiled list of all unique combinations of track formats and languages from all the files and you can then select which one(s) you want to keep. The program will then apply these settings to all the files. Say, for example, that the only subtitles I want to keep are VOBSUB subtitles in Swedish, I'd then make the following selection:




You can also press the loud speaker button or the "S"-button to specify the desired order of audio tracks and subtitle tracks, respectively. Once you do that, you'll be presented with a window like this:




where you can move the various languages around (double-clicking will move the language to "the other side", or you can use the ">>" and "<<" buttons). In the right side list, you can move the languages up and down by selecting them and clicking the "Up" or "Down" buttons to move it.

Another option (for the more advanced users) is the ability to set up a script that can control the keep/remove state of the various tracks in a more advanced (and more complicated for the non-techie) way. You enable this by clicking the button with the computer on it, which will lead you to this screen:




This is where you set up a script that'll select which tracks should be kept and which ones should be removed. It can filter on codec name, language name, and track name, which you can see if you press the '+' button:




You can have up to 999 script "lines" to define your conditions and can save the script under your own name (so you can have multiple scripts, but only one active at a time). The values "*", "A_*" and "S_*" means "Any track", "Any Audio Track" and "Any Subtitle Track", respectively. Likewise "S_TEXT/*" means "Any subtitle track whose codec starts with "S_TEXT/" (ie. f.ex. both "S_TEXT/UTF8" and "S_TEXT/SSA"). The "*" is a wild card that matches anything. You can also use the "*" character in the Track Name MATCH box, so you can f.ex. remove all commentary tracks by specifying "*commentary*" in that field.

You can toggle the match/not match state of the various options by clicking on the text, f.ex. here is the result of clicking the text "AND Language IS" for the previous screen:




When the program runs through the script, it compares each audio and subtitle track against this list to determine whether or not it is to be kept or not. The first script "line" that matches the track is the one that determines the final status. For this reason, the order of the script "lines" may be important, and you can thus move the various script "lines" up or down by clicking the respective button within the "line" you want to move.

As I said earlier, you can save your scripts under your own chosen names using the blue disk button. If the button is inactive, it means that the script has not been changed since your last save or load. You use the Folder-with-outward-pointing-arrow to open a previously saved script, and the fourth button will clear the current script and allow you to start a new one.

There's a special script name of "Default" which will be auto-loaded upon entering the Programming window for the first time. You can save your most used settings there, but you still need to enter the Programming window in order to "execute" the script. It won't auto-run (see Post #37 for an update, however).

Once I then press the OK button on the "Tracks Selection" window, the settings will be applied to all files (the track order will only be applied at output time, so you can't see the result of this in the track list). If you entered the Programming screen from the "Tracks Selection" window and pressed "OK" from there, it'll be the script that controls the state of the tracks. If you did not enter the Programming screen, or if you cancel'ed out of it, it'll be the settings in the "Tracks Selection" window that is applied.




You must then specify where the ReMuxer should save the new files. This is done via the "Output Button" (#4 - the disk):




Here you can specify either a fixed output directory for all the files, a named subdirectory under the file's current location or the same directory as the file's current location. In case of the this option, you can either overwrite the current file, or output the new file with an addendum to the file name, ie. if the source file is called "TEST.MKV" and you select the "Same directory as source" and the "Append this string to output name" options and enter "_NEW" as the string to append, the new file for TEST.MKV will be called TEST_NEW.MKV, and finally you can specify the "Parent directory of source file" as the output directory.

Beware, that if you choose to overwrite the source, I cannot be held responsible if you should lose your original file and the new file is unusable for whatever reason!

Once you have set up the various options, you just press the "Ok" button and let the program do its job...

Few questions

1.What is the purpose of this instead of just using MKVMerge
2. when i add a file it says cannot find mediainfo.dll, could these because i am using a 64bit version

There are two advantages to using this program instead of MKVMerge:

One: You can do a "Macro Selection" on which tracks you want to keep. I have had a few requests to incorporate into AudioConverter that it could, f.ex., be set up to only convert English or German language tracks and remove the other tracks and/or strip certain languages of subtitles or what-have-you. I have declined to do this in AudioConverter, since it would detract from that program's main objective: Convert audio tracks with as little fuzz as possible. This program then closes that gap in that you can add a bunch of .MKV files to the file list and then simply tell it which tracks across all the files you want it to keep.

Two: It makes it *very* easy to undo the header compression of a bunch of files without the need to go in to each and every audio and video track on each and every file and select "None" in the compression drop-down. Many people have problems with files that have been made with header compression enabled, and this utility makes it *very* easy to undo that.

So it's more a matter of ease and convenience than of actually being able to do something that MKV Merge can or can't do.

The "MediaInfo.DLL" problem can be solved by downloading the 32-bit version and placing the MediaInfo.DLL in the same directory as the program's .EXE file (or simply by installing it). This program is a 32-bit program and cannot "talk" to a 64-bit .DLL file - you'll need the 32-bit version of the .DLL somewhere - either in the same directory as the .EXE file, or somewhere in the PATH.

edit-Simply putting a 32bit version of the mediainfo.dll into the folder didn't work for me but installing the 32 bit version worked perfect.

I got used to using the batch mode of mkvmergeGUI to do this sort of thing.
Your new program will be *very* handy for many users.

And now for suggestions and wish list items...
(These are things I run into all the time)

1) Output Options: Add a "Output to parent folder of source"
- I often put stuff in F:\Temp and save in F:\ when using AudioConverter and would probably do the same here.

2) Options screen to select Audio And Subtitle language preferences to always keep.
- For me, I always want English, French, and if available in encode only, German, Italian and Spanish -- everything else to be removed.
- Make English primary/default subtitle set to YES, others set to DEFAULT
- Allow order of tracks to be set as preference: ex: Eng, Fre, Spa, Ger, Ita

3) Don't remove primary Audio track regardless of language, such as Asian movies that have English subtitle.
- However, in this case English Subs should be set to YES for Default track and YES for Forced track.

4) Allow re-ordering of tracks so that Video is always first, set YES to Default track,
followed by primary Audio track set to YES for Default track,
followed by any commentaries (other Audio tracks),
followed by Subtitles in order of preference from options,
followed by Chapters

5) I love the wrench idea, and this would be a good place to allow the ordering of tracks,
and setting Default and Forced track settings (like mmg.exe has)

6) Allow additional subtitle tracks to be added from any found (close matches) in
source folder, or a specific subs folder.
- I often download subs and place them all in one folder location, or have
movie.srt (default eng from preferences), or movie.en.srt, or movie.fr.srt with source movie
- This way if a movie was only encoded with english subs, I could have the french subs muxed in, while removing unwanted tracks.

7) One other annoying situation I've encountered when re-muxing is with TV show seasons that need to be
have audio converted from DTS to AC3, is when trying to add in subtitles previously saved.
In this case I uncompress the english and french subs into the source folder, however the names
don't always match up with the source TV episode naming.
For instance they might be in a subfolder or subs from scene group, or french subs don't use .fr. (or .fre.) in name.
It would be great to be able to match up the subs with the episode based on ep #, or using regexp for pattern matching
which are the Eng subs and which are Fre subs, and then re-mux with them.

8) Either an option
in AudioConverter to send converted/new file name into a file of some kind so that next time
you open MKV ReMuxer, that list of file names is auto-added to the list -- no need to search for it.
or if MKV ReMuxer already running

It is already so that if you attempt to remove tracks that would result in a file with no audio tracks, you're not allowed to do so...

Not likely, I'm afraid. But I am working on a plain Muxer that does a lot of these things automatically (such as auto-adding audio and subtitle tracks that match the file name containing the video track, and extracting the language from the additional characters in the file name, f.ex. "Movie.mp4" will auto-load "Movie UK SDH.srt" and set language as UK (eng) and name of track as "SDH"). Keep a look-out for the PopCorn MKV Maker program coming your way any week now .

I have a MKV file that has the video of course and an AC3 audio track. I would like to add a srt subtitle track. Which is the best program to use to do this and does it re-encode the file resulting in loss of quality? Many thanks

MKVMerge GUI (mmg.exe) from the MKV Tools package.

It doesn't re-encode enything, it simply adds together the various tracks you specify into a single MKV file.

Options screen: For every encode user says they want to keep (Ex English, French, German, Italian and Spanish by entering 2 digit code (en, fr, ...), same long list as found in mmg.exe
So those subs are included if they are already in the encode... if not, oh well!
However that's the other "wish" 6) above about adding subs from HDD location(s). In this case the user (me) would indicate to find english and french only.

It is already so that if you attempt to remove tracks that would result in a file with no audio tracks, you're not allowed to do so...

The primary track is usually indicated in the description (track name in mmg), or the other track says "commentary"

If anything cannot be 'guessed', highlight the movie line in Red, and the user can then manually indicate which track should be used.

5) this could be in the Tracks Selection screen from your first post and add 2 columns: Default Track flag and Forced track flag as drop down for Yes, Default, No (like mmg)
Also, many times the language in a subtitle or audio track was not properly set during the encode, and perhaps need a way to flag that movie.

8) to clarify, the point is to have a way to start running AC to convert DTS to AC3, and then have MKV ReMuxer know when they are done, and then user can select options as needed and run MKV ReMuxer.

9) Option to always remove commentaries, which I find not interesting and so I don't want any.

These requests goes waaaay beyond my initial requirements for this program, but I am not one to turn down a challenge without looking seriously at it .

So, I have now updated the program to include a major new feature: Programming. You can now set up a "program" (or "script") that is run against the files and their tracks to determine if the track should be kept or removed. See the tutorial for a detailed explanation.

Looks like 9) could be implemented the same way by searching audio tracks and specifying words to match
like commentary, director, etc, and then set to exclude that track.

Ok, tried it out, did some testing, and got the desired result.

The video I had used (all ENG unless stated otherwise)...

- I had 6 items added and then decided to delete the first one (which used A_*) while I was positioned on the bottom item,
after delete first item I was only left with the last item which I was on -- all others were removed.
- When entering track name "MATCHES" or "does not MATCH", it might be good to have "Starts with...", "...Ends with"
I was trying to enter "Commentary" and "Commentary *" remove track, but audio/subs without the word were also getting unticked back in main screen.
- buttons on programming screen are confusing, not working properly, can't load previously saved settings.
1st button is "+" which is fine,
2nd button is greyed out and I have no idea what it's used for (no tooltip),
3rd button is to save but no path is possible so I assume it's the same as program location,
4th button gives no idea what it's used for but it looks like it clears all entries and prompts me to save when I try to exit.
After all items got removed, I had no way of retrieving my previous settings.
- as well as 3rd button to save, need a "Save As..." button to save current changes under another name.

Ran the program -- after write error because I never pressed the save button on the main screen -- and it all worked perfectly when checked in mmg.exe

P.S. Is AC update going up?

EDIT:
- After re-opening the program, the programming window shows the 2nd button as Open/Load and this works,
however fields that said "Any language" is now empty and thus voids the rule.
- Save button would not work until I fixed those.
- Deleting any programming rule removes that one and all below it except the last rule.
- Rule: if track is A_* and Any language and Track Name MATCHES "Commentary",
then delete --> however normal A_AC3 track gets un-ticked back in the main screen (it has no track name).
- OK button on main screen would make more sense as START

Fixed (didn't enable Load button after Save. Load button is only supposed to be enabled when there actually are saved scripts that can be loaded).
